Your 1st trail adventure

If you like trail-running, you'll love adventure racing! Rudy Gory, Quechua trail-running team captain, guides you through the key preparations for your first adventure race.

HOW TO ADAPT YOUR TRAINING TO PREPARE FOR ADVENTURE RACING?

"One advantage is that all types of training, and all kinds of activity, are good preparation for multisport trails. As the name suggests, you can practice any sport to train for an adventure race. I would strongly advise linking several disciplines together in order to adapt your body and muscles to switching between sports. In addition to the technical and physical aspect, the key to good preparation is finding the right partner, so that you complement each other as you explore the sport. Above all, adventure racing is a team discipline. A good understanding between team-mates is fundamental."

ADVENTURE RACING IS BASED LARGELY ON ORIENTEERING. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO LEARN THE BASICS OF THIS DISCIPLINE?

"It's true that orienteering plays an important role in a successful adventure race. Practice makes perfect. The best way to practice is with an orienteering club. The best thing is to visit the website of your national orienteering association to find your closest club and training opportunities*. This will allow you to develop good technique, reduce the risk of making mistakes when navigating and looking for control points, and improve your performance."

WHAT TYPE OF ADVENTURE RACE IS BEST FOR THE NOVICE RACER? DO ADVENTURE RACES INVOLVE MORE MOUNTAIN BIKING?

"That depends of the profile of the person who wants to race. In general, it's a good idea to start with a shorter race involving several different, and most of all enjoyable, disciplines, so that you have as much fun as possible and want to try it again! When you're starting out, don't go for a race that's too long, too hard or too technical. Lots of races have a ‘beginner' option for racers who are novices and want to try out this great all-round sport, or its disciplines."

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST ADVENTURE RACE IN FRANCE, THE MOST ACCESSIBLE, FOR STARTING OUT IN THE SPORT?

"To ease yourself in I'd suggest Raid'Spect Nature in the Bugey region, which is where I come from. It's a varied and enjoyable race that takes place in a really friendly atmosphere and is based around sustainable development and respect for nature. It's a perfect first race! In France, there are many adventure races whose programmes include great trial races. With a bit of courage and a little madness you can soon become adept at this sport, which combines body, mind, technique and above all rock-solid team spirit."
