Horse sheets and rugs?

Your choice of rug, sheet and exercise sheet will depend on various criteria. You should choose a rug according to the temperature and to your horse's living conditions. An unclipped horse will not need the same protection as a clipped horse. The temperature of the horsebox and its exposure to air currents will also influence your decision.

    WHICH RUG TO CHOOSE?

    Characteristics

In winter, horses grow their winter coats. They are clipped almost entirely to prevent them from perspiring when they work, and to stop them catching cold afterwards

The rug should be chosen to suit your horse's living conditions:
    - A clipped horse needs more protection than an unclipped horse.
    - A horse in an outdoor box needs more protection than in an indoor stable.

The choice of rug is based on:
    - Thermal protection: measured in grams according to wattage. The higher the number of grams, the warmer the rug.
    - Scratch and tear resistance, measure in deniers. The more deniers, the tougher the rug.
    - Waterproofing on both the material and the stitching.

    Advantages

The rug replaces the coat when your horse has been clipped for winter. It protects your horse from the cold, and also from scratching and from wear to the coat.

    WHICH SHEET TO CHOOSE?

Sheets are used mid-season to prevent the coat from re-growing, in summer to keep flies away (honeycomb fly rugs), and in winter, under a rug.

Sheets are also used after working to protect your horse from the cold, and against scratching and wear to its coat.

Honeycomb fly rugs are used to dry the horse out after a shower, while waterproof sheets give protection from the rain

    WHICH EXERCISE SHEET TO CHOOSE?

Exercise sheets are designed to prevent heat from escaping from your horse's back while riding. In cold weather, they are used for warmth, or outdoors.

There are different kinds of exercise sheet:
    - Fleece or wool, for protection against the cold.
    - Polyamide or nylon (sometimes coated), for protection against rain.

Note: Exercise sheets that fit around the edges of the saddle can be removed without the rider having to dismount.
