  • Below average drivetrain, shifters and wheels

    Jorge (Finland)
Used for 2 to 8 weeks
At first the like looked beautiful and with good finishing. It came with everything already tune up and all. Just had to attach the handlebars and pedals and start riding.

However, the quality of the drivetrain, shifters and wheels is rather bad.

The front shifter have not worked properly from the beggining. It has 2 levers, one should shift up and the other down. The shift up lever works perfectly. However, the shift down lever just releases all the tension of the cable when pressed, so the chain goes immediately to the smaller chainring if you are in the biggest one. To shift from the bigger to the middle ring you need to hold the shift up lever at a very specific position at the same time you actuate the shift down lever, then you need to carefully release the levers.

I could live with this problem. However, after only 2 months of use, a much bigger problem started to happen. This week the temperatures dropped to about -1C to 3C. When I try to use the bike the freewheel dos not engage with the hub, meaning that the chain and cogs are rotating but the rotation is not passed to the wheel.
This usually happens at much colder temperatures (-20C or lower) because the freewheel ratchets grease gets too thick, preventing the ratchets to engage. At the current temperatures it only happens when water or dirt is mixed with the grease in the freewheel ratchets and freeze, preventing them to engage.
So there are two options: There was water or dirt entering in the freewheel mechanism, what should not happen in an almost new bike with good seals. The other option is that the grease was dirty from the beggining.

The drivetrain also does not handle very well this not so cold temperatures. The shifting below 5C is not smooth at all, The chain shifts several seconds (sometimes more than 10s) after the shifters were actuated. Sometimes it does not shift at all. In those cases you need to shift one more time and then the chain shifts 2 positions. After that you can shift one position in the other direction to get to the desired gear.

The wheels also feel quite fragile, but that is a minor problem compared to the others and if it was the only problem I would still give the product 5 stars.

The bottomline is that this bike is a good summer bike, with some minor quality flaws in the shifters and wheels (understandable for the price). Nonetheless, it gets unrideable for temperatures below 5C, so if you look for a daily commuting bike and you live in a place where the temperatures drops to near zero, I would not advise this product.

Great bike for the money. Very sturdy but also light enough to not matter. I am slightly concerned that the rims are not double wall, but time will tell. My greatest concern is that you are handed a bike from the display, not one brought in for you and set up. The display bikes have been bumped and ridden round the store by heavens knows who. Very disappointed on that aspect.
    Great looking bike
    As above
    Response of the brand
    Hi Roden,

The wheels are infact double walled rims, all the rims on the road bike are doubled walled.
As for the fact all bikes are out on display and tested, this is just because of how Decathlon is, try before you buy as you will. However, most stores would order you a new one or get one from the back (if they have any) if you ask them.

  • Good but worried about pedals

    Diane (United Kingdom)
Used for 2 to 8 weeks
We bought this bike for my son - all went well but two weeks in his pedal came off while cycling - thankfully only suffered a few bruises. We took it back to decathlon to check the pedal thread and find out why it happened. We bought different pedals and they replaced it. Now we'll keep an eye on it to make sure they are ok. However a week later another boy at his cycling club, has the same bike, and his pedal came off too! His accident was far worse and has ended up with a broken arm. A coincidence? I'm a little worried now.

Other than that it's a smart little bike which my son loves.
Looks good, brakes good, colour, great size choice
Pedal came off while cycling !

  • Triban 500 and its wheels

    DAVID (United Kingdom)
Used for More than 1 year
Have had my Triban 500 nearly 2 years now and have ridden over 5000 miles training, touring and taking part in AUDAX and Sportive events.
I weigh 110 kg and have never had the slightest problem with my wheels.
My other bikes are a TREK Emonda and Raleigh Royal but the day to day reliability of the Triban makes it my favourite bike.
Have been a competitive cyclist for over 40 years and would recommend the Triban 500 ( or SE ) to anyone.
