Backpack technical tests.
Backpack components are approved in laboratory tests including:fabrics, buckles, straps, foams, zips...For example for a fabric: resistance to abrasion, tearing, colour durability against UV, washing, waterproofing...Then, a test is done on the finished product that acceleratedly simulates the kind of treatment it will be subjected to over the years to assess the assembly strength:The backpack is weighed, then placed on a dummy which simulates the movement of fast walking through 1000 of cycles.
How is backpack volume measured?
The volume of each backpack is measured using a standardised method: we fill the main compartment as well as each pocket with little balls. Then, we empty these balls into a graduated container, which gives the equivalent volume in litres.
Environmental measurements
Oxylane, together with Quechua, has decided to inform you of the environmental impact of its hiking backpacks over their entire lifespan. This work follows an experiment that began in July 2011 with the French Ministry of Ecology. Scores ranging from A to E were awarded based on comparisons among Quechua backpacks only. Details on this project and the calculation methods used are available at http://www.oxylane.com/20/demarche-environnementale
