Sage Kotsenburg teamed up with our product design and engineering team, wanting to work on a new snowboard designed for riding on undulating, wooded and technical terrain. The concept was to be able to pivot and release the tail freely to allow the rider to follow the contours of the terrain ahead of them. The team went to the drawing board (read: very expensive computer software), produced proto #1 ... and we were off on what would become the Sky Pilot. After shape iterations, testing different fibreglass layups and improvising with carbon additives, we found the ideal combination and began refining the best tool for the job. The Sky Pilot is built around a slightly wider-than-normal footprint, and features a medium flex "right in the middle". It integrates K2's 3D Base Contour in the nose and tail, raising the contact points above the snow and achieving the "pivotability" Sage was looking for in deep powder. This "spoon" in the nose and tail works in harmony with our new Carbon Y-Beam — adding pop and stability to the rear, and transmitting energy to the contact points of the nose — meaning you get the desired stability and edge pressure, without unnecessary torsional stiffness. Believing that everyone should be able to experience how incredible the mountains are, the Sky Pilot was designed with an all-gender approach — with sizes, flex profiles and waist widths adapted to accommodate a smaller foot. The Sky Pilot starts at 148 and goes up to 163. For the best experience, choose a size 3–5 cm shorter than your usual snowboard length, thanks to VolumeShift™.
