The 2nd generation of the innovative and successful OHM by EDELRID comes with updates for easier handling. The pre-resistor increases braking effect for climbing teams with significant weight differences and features a swivel joint for greater freedom of movement. The direction of attachment at the first hook is no longer relevant. The locking system prevents accidental opening and simplifies rope insertion and device removal during lowering. The significant weight difference between climber and belayer is a common issue, especially in climbing pairs where one partner is often much lighter. In the event of a fall, the lighter belayer is jerked off the ground and crashes against the wall, being pulled up significantly, which increases the fall distance for the climber. If the climber is still near the ground, both collide harshly. In the worst case, the climber falls to the ground. The development of the EDELRID OHM was supported by scientific studies at IFT Stuttgart. It is a pre-resistor installed at the first hook of the belay chain. In the event of a fall, the rope is pulled into the device's braking unit, and the fall is progressively slowed down. This means the device does not abruptly stop the rope but slows its passage speed, allowing the fall to be dynamically caught by the belayer. The EDELRID OHM increases friction in the belay chain, regardless of the belay device used. This means the belayer needs to exert significantly less hand force on the brake rope and is not uncontrollably pulled upwards or against the wall. Its design does not restrict rope handling in lead climbing. It neither increases friction in lead climbing nor negatively affects rope payout. The braking effect of the device is activated only in the event of a fall. Lowering a heavier climber is also significantly easier to control due to the increased friction.
