The Vango Atlas Junior Sleeping Bag is built specifically for kids who are serious about camping, not just the occasional sleepover in the garden. With a 148cm internal length, it fits children up to about 5ft tall comfortably, which typically covers ages 6 to 12 depending on how fast they're growing. The mummy shape isn't just for show, it tapers from shoulders down to feet which means there's less dead air space for small bodies to heat up, keeping them warmer through the night whilst packing down smaller than rectangular bags. You get an 8.5 TOG rating with ThermoLock synthetic insulation, making this a proper three-season bag that handles spring through autumn camping down to around 5°C when kids wear decent pyjamas and socks. The single-layer construction uses Insulation Lock S-stitching, which holds the fill evenly across the bag so you won't get cold spots developing over time.
What makes this practical for family camping is the machine washable design, because let's face it, kids and camping equals mud, spills and general chaos. The Polair 190T polyester outer stands up to tent floor scuffing whilst the brushed microfibre lining feels genuinely soft rather than scratchy against skin. The two-way zip lets you ventilate from the bottom on warmer nights, and crucially for younger children, the hood uses elastic rather than a drawcord, which eliminates strangulation risks whilst still reducing heat loss from their head. The woven zip puller is easier for small hands to grip than metal tabs, and you get hanging loops for drying after wet weather plus a stuffsack with compression straps. At 1kg it's light enough for kids to carry in their own rucksacks. Just check your child's height before buying, this 148cm internal length works brilliantly for smaller children but they'll outgrow it eventually, at which point you'll need to size up to an adult bag.
