The Vango Helvellyn 300 in Pamir Green offers a solid balance between weight and durability that's proven itself on countless backpacking trips. Its semi-geodesic design uses PowerLite 7001-T6 alloy poles to create a structure that stands firm in wind without the bulk you'd get from a full geodesic tent. At 3.3kg trail weight, it's manageable for solo backpackers sharing the load or pairs splitting components. The pack size of 46 x 17cm fits reasonably well in or strapped to most rucksacks. What makes this tent practical is the all-in-one pitching system where the inner stays clipped to the flysheet, so you're not faffing about with separate components in deteriorating weather. Colour-coded poles speed things up, and you'll have it standing in about 10 minutes once you've done it a few times. The flysheet can pitch independently too, giving you quick shelter if you need it.
Weather protection is where this tent earns its keep. The Protex 70D flysheet carries a 3000mm hydrostatic head rating whilst the groundsheet offers 6000mm, both with fully taped seams. The bathtub groundsheet extends 10cm up the inner walls, which blocks splashes during heavy rain. I've found the Gothic arch design sheds water effectively rather than pooling on top. Mesh side vents and partial mesh doors help manage condensation, though you'll still get some on cold nights like any three-season tent. The porch provides enough covered space for boots and a rucksack. Reflective guylines and high-grip adjusters that work one-handed are genuinely useful features when you're securing the tent in fading light or gloves. This tent's DofE rlow impactmmended status isn't just marketing, it meets the practical requirements for expedition use. It's been weather tested to EN ISO 5912 standards and uses fire-retardant fabrics. The O-shaped doors zip smoothly, and internal pockets keep headtorches and essentials within reach. Aluminium pegs are included, though you might want to upgrade these for rocky ground.
