Bikes FAQs

How do I choose the right bike for my needs?

The right bike depends on how and where you plan to ride. For speed and smooth roads, road bikes are ideal. For trails and rougher terrain, opt for a mountain bike. Riders seeking durability and off-road capability often explore rugged mountain bikes designed to handle uneven surfaces and challenging conditions. The technical reason for choosing a road-specific bicycle involves narrow high-pressure tyres that reduce rolling resistance on tarmac. If you find a bike deal on a gravel model, you gain a versatile frame capable of handling both light forest paths and paved streets. For long-distance touring, bikes with multiple mounting points allow for panniers and racks. When selecting your bicycle, consider the weight of the frame; aluminium offers a balance of durability and lightness, while carbon fibre provides maximum stiffness for competitive cycling. Always ensure the geometry fits your flexibility to prevent back strain during long sessions in the saddle.

Can I test ride a bike before buying it?

Yes, many Decathlon stores offer test ride areas or let you take a short spin outside. Speak to a staff member in-store to confirm. Trying before buying helps ensure your comfort, handling preference, and correct frame size, which you can also check in our bike size guide. Once you have selected your ride, exploring performance-focused road bikes can help you find a model suited for speed, efficiency, and smooth rides on paved surfaces. Smart tip: When test riding, pay close attention to the reach; if your arms feel overly extended, you might need a smaller frame or a shorter stem. Testing the gear shifts under a light load will also give you a feel for the drivetrain responsiveness and the mechanical "click" of a well-tuned indexed system.

What are the benefits of electric bikes compared to regular bikes?

Electric bikes offer pedal assistance, making hills and longer commutes much easier while still providing a great workout. They are perfect for riders who want more range, less fatigue, or need a boost in traffic or up steep inclines. The reason for the mid-drive motor in premium models is to maintain a low centre of gravity, which improves handling during sharp turns. For everyday commuting and short urban trips, many riders consider practical city bikes that are designed for comfort, upright riding positions, and easy manoeuvrability in busy streets. Expert advice: Always check the watt-hour (Wh) rating of the battery; a higher capacity allows you to use the maximum assistance mode for longer durations without worrying about running out of power before reaching your destination.

How do I know what size bike frame to buy?

Getting the right frame size is key for comfort and efficiency. Use our online bike size guide to match your height and leg length with the ideal frame. In-store staff can also help with sizing and adjustments to ensure your knee has the correct slight bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke. The technical reason behind correct sizing is to ensure optimal power transfer and to prevent repetitive strain injuries in the joints. Riders who need compact storage or multimodal commuting options often consider convenient folding bikes that are easier to carry and store in small spaces. If you are between sizes, a smaller frame is often easier to handle and more "flickable," whereas a larger frame offers more stability at high speeds. Small advice: Always check the standover height; you should have at least 1 inch of clearance between your body and the top tube when standing flat-footed over the bicycle to ensure safe mounting and dismounting.
