Road Bikes FAQs

How do I find the correct road bike frame size?

Riding a bike that is wrong in size can feel uncomfortable and make pedalling harder, so getting the right fit is important. Road bikes are usually sized in centimetres, based on the frame rather than wheel size. Your height and inside leg measurement are the two key metrics you need to ensure a comfortable reach to the handlebars. For adult male riders, our collection of men's road bikes features geometries optimised for power transfer and stability on long stretches of tarmac. A properly sized bike allows for a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the stroke and a natural position for your shoulders. The technical reason behind specific frame sizing is to keep your centre of gravity balanced between the wheels, which improves handling during high-speed descents. Smart tip: If you are between two sizes, go for the smaller frame for a more agile ride or the larger frame if you prioritise long-distance comfort.

What is the difference between an endurance and a race road bike?

The difference lies in the geometry and the intended use of the frame during your training sessions. Endurance models, like our versatile Triban bikes, feature a more upright riding position and a longer wheelbase to soak up road vibrations over hours in the saddle. Race-focused carbon road bikes, such as the Van Rysel RCR, have a shorter head tube for an aerodynamic tucked position and a stiffer frame for maximum responsiveness. Female cyclists can find tailored geometries in our range of women's road bikes, which often include narrower handlebars and shorter stems to suit a different anatomical reach. The technical reason for using carbon fibre in race models is the ability to layer material to create lateral stiffness for sprinting while maintaining vertical compliance for weight reduction. Small tip: Endurance bikes are ideal for those tackling unpredictable road surfaces or sportives where comfort over several hours is the primary goal.

Are disc brakes better than rim brakes for road cycling?

Disc brakes have become a popular standard because they provide superior stopping power in all weather conditions. When riding road bikes on greasy or wet surfaces, disc brakes offer consistent modulation and don't wear down your expensive wheel rims. The reason they are so effective is that the braking surface is moved away from the road grime and water that usually coats the rims during a downpour. While slightly heavier than traditional rim brakes, the safety and confidence they provide on steep, technical descents are well worth the trade-off. For younger enthusiasts starting their cycling journey, our kids road bikes often utilize simplified braking systems to ensure they can stop safely with smaller hands. Small advice: Keep your disc rotors clean by avoiding touching them with oily fingers, as even a small amount of skin oil can cause the brakes to squeal or lose friction.

How do I maintain my road bike for longevity?

Consistent maintenance is the secret to a smooth ride and preventing premature wear on your drivetrain components. After every wet ride, wipe down your road bicycle and apply a high-quality lubricant to the chain to prevent rust and ensure crisp gear shifts. The technical reason for keeping your tyres at the correct pressure (PSI) is to minimize rolling resistance while protecting your rims from impact damage. Riders who prioritize lightweight performance and stiffness often rely on advanced carbon road bikes, which require careful handling and proper torque settings to maintain structural integrity. Check your brake pads regularly for wear indicators to ensure you always have maximum stopping force when you need it most. Expert advice: Investing in a torque wrench is a smart move for anyone owning carbon road bikes, as over-tightening bolts on carbon components can cause invisible structural damage. By keeping your bike clean and properly adjusted, you reduce the mechanical friction that saps your energy, allowing you to ride further and faster with less effort.
