Camping Plates and Bowls FAQs

Which materials are used for camping plates and bowls?

A few, each with its merits. BPA-free polypropylene is light and impact-resistant, so it shrugs off drops; enamel looks the part and resists scratches and stains but can chip on a hard knock; stainless steel and titanium are the most durable, with titanium the lightest of all. Double-walled designs even keep your fingers cool when the food is piping hot, which paper and thin plastic can't manage. Most are dishwasher safe and pack flat for the journey. Match them to a few pieces of camping cutlery, and the outdoor table is set.

What makes camping plates and bowls easy to pack?

A good nesting set has bowls, plates and a mug that stack neatly inside one another, with a clip or bag to keep everything secure in the rucksack. Flat, lightweight pieces save the most space. Tuck the stack in beside your camping cooking sets, and the whole kitchen-and-table kit travels as one tidy bundle rather than scattered through the bag. A mesh or zipped pouch also keeps sandy or wet pieces away from the rest of your gear.

How many plates and bowls do you need?

Allow at least one plate and one bowl per person, plus a spare or two for serving and for the inevitable drop in the grass. Deep, wide-rimmed shapes that double as either a plate or a bowl save you from carrying both. Set them near your camping coolers so plates, bowls and chilled food are all together when it's time to serve up.

Why use proper camping dinnerware outdoors?

Reusable plates and bowls are tougher, lighter and kinder to the planet than disposable paper or flimsy supermarket sets, and they handle hot food and rough ground without buckling. They wipe clean and pack flat for the next trip. Paired with our camping stoves and cartridges, the plates and bowls give everyone something solid to eat from once the meal is ready.

What care do camping plates and bowls need?

Most just need warm water and a quick wash after each meal, with enamel and stainless steel wiping clean easily and resisting stains. Dry them before stacking so nothing turns musty in storage. Keep hot drinks sorted at the same table with a set of camping mugs, and store the whole stack somewhere dry between trips so it's ready to go next time.
