How to choose your saddle according to your riding style
To choose the right saddle, it all depends on your position on your bike. For a position with a straight back (90°), choose a wide saddle, often with gel, ideal for riding in the city. If you are slightly bent forward (60°), an intermediate saddle will provide an excellent balance between comfort and performance on regular rides. Finally, in sport mode (30°), a thin saddle with a narrow peak is the best solution to reduce pressure and improve performance.
TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR BIKE RIDE:
For optimal comfort, adjust your saddle at four key points. Choose a model suited to your posture (for example, a 30° back angle).Adjust the height to suit your body type, then adjust the angle to avoid discomfort.Lastly, move it forwards or backwards to ensure proper alignment. For complete comfort, don't forget to wear cycling attire suited to the length of your rides.
1. Determining the saddle height (part 1):
Measure your inseam in 4 simple steps:
- Stand straight, barefoot against a wall, with your feet apart (15-20 cm).
- Place a rigid book between your legs and raise it up.
- Mark the top of the book on the wall.
Measure the distance between the floor and this mark:this is your inseam length, which is essential for determining the size of your bicycle.
1. Determining the saddle height (part 2):
Calculate your ideal position: Inseam × 0.883 = perfect saddle height.
This is the distance between the bottom bracket and the top of the saddle.
Example: 89 cm × 0.883 = 78.6 cm
2. Adjusting the saddle angle:
Adjust the angle of your saddle for optimal comfort.
Take a spirit level, place it on the front between the centre and the tip.
Make sure it is straight. Then adjust to what feels most comfortable after a few test rides.
3. How to measure your sit-bone width
To measure the width of your sit bones, place two pieces of corrugated cardboard on a stool.Sit on them with your back straight, applying strong pressure for one minute.Stand up and locate the two marks left there.Mark the centre of each mark and measure the distance between these two points. This measurement will help you choose the right saddle width for optimal comfort.
3. Adjusting the saddle setback:
Forward or back? Find the right distance
Sit on the bike, with the crank horizontal:
Knee aligned with the pedal = right posture.
Otherwise, alter the position of the saddle. It's quick and effective.
