Running FAQs

What running gear is needed to start properly?

Running does not need a complicated kit list, but the right running gear can make the first few weeks feel smoother and more comfortable. Start with footwear that matches your surface, breathable clothing that manages sweat, and one or two small items that solve real problems, such as carrying keys or staying visible on darker routes. ... For beginners in Ireland, the priority is comfort before speed. A secure phone belt, light gloves or a cap can be more useful than extra gadgets if you are running before work, during lunch or after dark. Build your kit around the routes you typically use. If pockets, lights, belts or watches are the missing piece, running accessories help keep small essentials organised without turning every run into a full race setup.

How to choose running shoes for my weekly routine?

The best running shoes depend on where you run, how often you train and how your feet feel after a session. Road runners usually need cushioning for repeated impact on pavements, while mixed-route runners may want more grip and a slightly firmer hold. The technical reason cushioning matters is that every stride sends force through the heel, arch and forefoot, so a suitable midsole helps reduce harsh impact during regular training. Pro tip: try shoes later in the day, when feet are naturally a little larger, and leave enough toe room for longer runs. A broad range of running shoes makes it easier to match support, cushioning and pace goals before adding more specialist kit.

What running clothes work best for Irish weather?

Running clothes should help you stay dry, warm or cool without trapping too much sweat. Cotton can feel comfortable at first, but it holds moisture and may cause rubbing once the pace or distance increases. Lightweight synthetic tops, breathable shorts, tights and wind-resistant layers are better for regular outdoor running because they move sweat away from the skin. In Ireland, the clever approach is layering rather than wearing one heavy jacket. A thin base layer manages moisture, while a light shell blocks wind or drizzle when needed. Ideal for unpredictable commutes, park loops and coastal paths, weather proof running gear gives you flexible protection without adding unnecessary bulk.

When should running nutrition and hydration be used?

Running nutrition and hydration are not just for marathon runners. They become useful when your runs get longer, warmer or more structured. For short easy runs, water and a normal meal routine may be enough. Once you move beyond steady 60-minute sessions, fluids, electrolytes or quick carbohydrates can help maintain energy and reduce that heavy-legged feeling near the end. The practical reason is that your body uses stored carbohydrate during harder efforts, while sweat loss can affect comfort and focus. Test products during training rather than on event day, and keep the flavour simple if your stomach is sensitive. During longer sessions, running nutrition & hydration can support pacing, recovery and consistency.

How can running equipment help you stay consistent?

Running equipment is most useful when it removes small excuses. A visible vest helps with evening safety, a belt keeps your phone from bouncing, a watch can guide steady pacing, and recovery tools help you feel ready for the next run. The goal is not to own every item, but to fix the point where your routine usually breaks down. If sore calves, tight hips or tired feet interrupt training, add simple recovery habits after harder sessions. Foam rolling, massage balls and compression support can help manage muscle tightness when used sensibly. After wet or sweaty runs, dry shoes naturally and wash clothing as instructed to protect elasticity. Running care and recovery are especially useful for runners increasing weekly distance or returning after a break.
