Trail Running Nutrition & Hydration FAQs

Which nutrition and hydration approach suits short and long trail runs?

Base your plan on how long you expect to be moving, the weather, route difficulty and what you have already tested during training. ... Shorter sessions may mainly require fluids and electrolytes, while longer endurance runs can need a more structured combination of hydration and carbohydrate. Decathlon separates several nutrition products according to duration, with different options for efforts under three hours and sessions extending beyond three hours. As you are preparing for trail running, also consider how easily you can carry, open and consume everything while moving over uneven terrain. Pro tip: practise your full fuelling routine on training runs before an event. Testing timing, flavours and portions in advance can help you identify what is comfortable to drink and eat while running rather than introducing unfamiliar products on race day.

When are energy drinks useful during trail running?

Energy drinks become more relevant when you need fluids and carbohydrate together rather than hydration alone. The trail running energy drinks range includes options intended for different exercise durations, so check whether the product is designed for shorter sessions or prolonged endurance efforts. Some isotonic formulas combine carbohydrate with minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium, helping you manage both fluid intake and energy during longer runs. Pro tip: mix drinks according to the stated concentration rather than making them stronger for extra energy. An overly concentrated drink can taste harder to tolerate, particularly when you need to keep drinking it for several hours.

How do electrolyte tablets fit into a trail hydration plan?

Electrolytes can help replace minerals lost through perspiration without necessarily supplying a large amount of carbohydrate. For example, a sugar free electrolyte drink can let you separate mineral intake from your main energy source when that suits your plan. Decathlon's reviewed tablet format prepares 500 ml of drink and is positioned for sessions under three hours rather than as a major fuel source. Pro tip: remember that hydration and fuelling are related but not identical. If your run requires substantial carbohydrate, an electrolyte-only drink may need to be combined with suitable food, gels or another energy source rather than being treated as a complete endurance nutrition strategy.

What energy intake options work for longer trail runs?

Longer runs often benefit from carrying more than one texture or format so you are not relying on the same food for several hours. Within the trail running energy intakes range, options can include gels, fruit-based products and other compact carbohydrate sources intended for use while exercising. Some Decathlon products are specifically developed for activities lasting more than three hours, with packaging made easier to handle while moving. Pro tip: plan your intake by time rather than waiting until you suddenly feel low on energy. Carrying portions in an order that matches your planned schedule can also make them easier to reach without stopping or searching through your running kit.

Why can fruit jellies be practical during trail running?

Solid or semi-solid energy can provide a useful alternative when you do not want to rely entirely on gels or drinks. Decathlon's citrus energy fruit jellies give you a compact format that can be carried alongside other nutrition during longer sessions. Fruit-based energy products can also offer a different texture, which may become useful when repeatedly consuming fuel over several hours. Decathlon has used athlete feedback to improve the handling and texture of fruit-jelly products so they are easier to eat during exercise. Pro tip: try several types of fuel during training and note what still feels easy to eat later in a long run. Variety can make a planned nutrition routine easier to maintain as fatigue builds.
