Manoeuvring and warning signals
It is used to clearly indicate the manoeuvres you are performing (if you are a mechanically propelled vessel, including a motorised sailing boat), for example:
‘I am coming on the starboard side’ (one short blast).
I am coming on the port side’ (two short blasts).
‘I am backing up’ (three short blasts).
To warn of uncertainty about the intentions or manoeuvre of another vessel (five short blasts).

The foghorn (or equivalent sound device) is part of the safety equipment.It is often mandatory for pleasure boats of a certain size, particularly those over 12 metres in the offshore category, but it is strongly recommended on all boats, even when not mandatory, to improve safety.
