The Vango Arcadia 7.5 Double Self-inflating Mat gives you a proper cushioned sleeping surface for car camping, festivals, or setting up in your caravan awning. At 7.5cm thick, it puts decent padding between you and cold ground whilst the open-cell foam core provides insulation that basic inflatables can't match. You'll open the brass valve, watch the mat expand as air gets drawn in automatically, then add a few breaths to firm it up to your liking. The 200cm length and 130cm width accommodate two adults or give a solo camper loads of room without worrying about rolling onto the tent floor during the night. It's not designed for backpacking though - at 5.2kg and with a packed size around 70cm long, this belongs in the boot of your car rather than on your shoulders.
Self-inflating mats work best when they've warmed to ambient temperature, so don't expect instant inflation if you've just pulled it from a freezing car. The Arcadia handles three-season camping well with its TOG rating of 13, though proper winter conditions will need additional insulation underneath. The foam core won't contour to seriously uneven ground like a full air mattress would, so you'll want a reasonably flat pitch for best comfort. When you're packing up, the brass valve system deflates quickly - just roll from the opposite end whilst kneeling on it to squeeze the air out, then use the included compression bag to compact it down. Store it unrolled with valves open at home between trips, otherwise the foam loses its ability to self-inflate properly over time.
