What does waterproof mean?
Waterproof is a relative term, as it ultimately depends on water pressure. For hardshells, 'waterproof' means that the clothing sufficiently prevents water from penetrating even in heavy and persistent rain. The water column indicates the waterproofness of a fabric. The value is usually given in mm. It concerns the question of how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before water penetrates through it. The threshold is the water column. You can visualize the measurement method by stretching the fabric freely and placing a cylinder on it that covers an area of 10cm². Now fill this cylinder with water. 2000mm means that the cylinder is filled with water to a height of 2m, and then it starts to drip through the fabric. At 10,000mm, it is already 10m of water.
