MIPS While standards address the force experienced during direct impacts, the Mips component is tested to help reduce the internal rotational movement of your brain during an impact, the types of injuries that can lead to concussions. During an impact, the low-friction Mips layer allows the helmet to slide 10 to 15 millimeters in all directions, reducing some of the rotational movement to the brain compared to helmets without Mips. VT Helmet Rating The Bern Major has earned a 5-star safety rating from the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab, the highest possible rating in this test. Through a series of impact tests, the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab calculates a STAR (Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk) score, which adds up the exposure-weighted risks for common cyclist head impact scenarios and their corresponding concussion risks.
